Read the Lease

You first need to become familiar with the lease. You should have read this well before you signed, but time may have passed and you need to refresh what was said in it. You should look for the section about trying to terminate the rental contract early. Remember that this is a legal document, so you will find some clause about when and how you can leave. Even if the lease does say that early termination is not allowed or isn’t possible, there are often still some options available for you to try if you get creative.

Talk to the Landlord

No matter what the lease says, you need to spend some time communicating with the landlord. Let them know that you need to end the lease early, and some of the reasons as to why. They may be open to it and will work with you to find a new tenant or make sure that you are able to leave. Sometimes, they may have a policy in place that will still require you to pay the fees and give up the security deposit, but they may still give a good recommendation when you leave, which can help you later.
