Ciao, fellow adventurers!
Living in New Zealand has blessed me with plenty of outdoor adventures, but I felt the itch to explore Europe next. And after a lot of research, I decided that a dolomites trip in Northern Italy was just what I needed. Those towering peaks, quaint villages, and clear lakes called to me – and trust me, it was worth every moment.
I’ve spent most of my travels either on the other side of the world or in places you’d consider quite "remote", so a trip to the Dolomites was an exciting and new experience. Nestled in the heart of the Alps, the Dolomites are known for their unique jagged peaks, ideal for those who love hiking, history, and jaw-dropping landscapes. If you’re planning a trip and wondering where to start, I’m here to share my insights and why this destination should absolutely be on your bucket list.
Why Choose the Dolomites for Your Next Trip?
Before you pack your bags, here's why a Dolomites trip is so special. As I made my way into the Dolomites, I found them to be a brilliant mix of beauty, adventure, and history. The mountains are dramatic, rugged, and unlike any scenery I’ve ever seen – it was a photographer's dream! The charming alpine villages scattered throughout the region are steeped in Tyrolean culture, blending Austrian and Italian influences. As I settled into the Dolomites vibe, it was hard not to fall in love with the place.
What to Expect on a Dolomites Trip?
-
Stunning Landscapes: Picture yourself surrounded by towering spires of rock, lush valleys, and clear blue lakes. Every turn brought a new breathtaking sight, from the dramatic cliffs to serene alpine meadows. I will never forget hiking up to Lago di Braies – one of the most stunning lakes I’ve ever seen. The water was so still and clear, it perfectly reflected the surrounding mountains, making it feel like a fairytale scene.
-
Traditional Alpine Villages: Besides the outdoor adventures, exploring the villages is a must. Places like Ortisei or Cortina d'Ampezzo are a delight – narrow streets, wooden chalets, and the combination of Italian coffee with Austrian-inspired food was a wonderful part of the experience. Don’t leave without trying some traditional mountain fare, especially local dishes such as speck (cured ham) or strudel.
-
Rich History: The Dolomites were the site of heavy fighting during World War I, and now, you can visit military museums and trenches that tell a poignant story about the past. If you're a history buff, this adds an educational layer to your adventure.
-
Activities for All: Whether you're an adventurer or a culture lover, the Dolomites caters to everyone. For me, hiking was the highlight, but there are also opportunities for cycling, skiing, and exploring the surrounding towns.
Must-See Places and Activities in the Dolomites
Tre Cime di Lavaredo: If you only do one thing in the Dolomites, it should be the hike to Tre Cime di Lavaredo. It’s one of the most iconic spots, with towering peaks that punctuate the skyline. The hike is doable for most people, and the views were enough to make me feel on top of the world.
Lago di Braies: After spending the morning hiking, I decided to take a leisurely boat ride on Lago di Braies, surrounded by imposing mountains. The lake looks so surreal it felt like I had been transported into a painting.
Passo Gardena: Another beautiful spot! If you have access to a car, driving through Passo Gardena offers some incredible vistas, and I made sure to stop at various points just to soak in the sights. I even stumbled across a few hidden alpine meadows that added a sense of tranquillity to the day.
Final Thoughts
The Dolomites are a destination unlike any other, combining rich culture, stunning landscapes, and history. Whether you're into outdoor adventures or just looking for a peaceful escape, there’s so much to see and experience. Now, more than ever, I recommend this region of Italy for your next adventure!
